Roulette is an incredibly popular game amongst casino and gambling veterans and those wanting to have a good time with their friends for a few hours. The game is easy to understand, with the “skill” coming in the form of how you bet.
If you aren’t familiar with roulette systems and strategies, this post will go through some of the betting strategies you can use. Be aware though that none of them are any better than random bets. But it helps to know what others have already tried.
Roulette Basics
Roulette is a straightforward game to understand, with only two different “types” of roulette. US roulette will feature a green 0 slot and an additional green 00 slot, and European roulette will not have the extra 00 slot.
Considering you will be in Las Vegas, you will be playing American roulette. The green slots add to the odds, with your odds of winning on a single number sitting at one in 38, as opposed to one in 37 in European roulette.
You simply place your bet to play and then let the ball and roulette wheel do the work. Betting strategies and types of bets will be discussed next, but there is not much other than betting.
Types of Bets
There are six different bets known as “inside bets” in the world of roulette. While you can use a strategy, if you are new to the game or looking to be involved on a basic level, these are the main bets you will be placing.
Straight
A straight bet is the most common. It involves you picking a number and betting on that one and that one alone. You have odds of 1 in 38, and it is your best chance for the highest payout. It is the riskiest bet, but it is also the best that could win you the most money in one spin.
Split
A split bet is placing your chips on two adjacent numbers. The roulette wheel is not set up in numerical order, but a split bet obviously gives you a better chance of winning, with the odds at about 1 in 17. But better chances or not, the house edge is still the same.
Street
A street bet is another fairly common one that you will see, and you split your chips across three different numbers in a row. A street bet takes your odds to one in 11. You will see this bet at a roulette table a lot as it falls right in the middle of your best and worst odds.
Corners
Another common bet is a corner bet, and this is placing your chips across four corresponding numbers to make a square. This bet is moving towards the less “risky” side of bets. While it is not risk-free, your one in 8 odds is relatively low.
Double Street
A double street bet is a two, 3-number bet and covers two adjacent vertical lines. It is simply doubling up the street bet that was discussed earlier, and your odds are cut to about half of a street bet.
Trio
A trio bet is a special type of bet that involves three numbers, one being the zero and then two adjacent numbers. This is usually the bet taken if you are feeling lucky about the ball landing on zero but still want to hedge your bets.
Outside Bets
Outside bets are slightly different, as they are considered more general. Inside bets, the ones discussed previously, are specific to certain numbers or groups of numbers, while outside bets focus on the entirety of the table.
Low or High
You will see two big sectors labeled “1-18” and “19-36” on a roulette table. These sectors are used for high or low bets, as you place your chips on one of them, and if the ball lands on any one of those numbers in the range, you win.
Red or Black
Like the high and low bets, you will see two big sectors with a red diamond and a black diamond. Betting on either will cover every number of that particular color, and you will win if that color wins, irrelevant of the number.
Even or Odds
Even and odds work the same way as the two bets before. The betting table has two rectangles, named “Even” and “Odd.” You bet on which number is going to be picked.
Dozens
Dozens work slightly differently two the other bets discussed. If you look at a roulette table, you will see twelve rows of three numbers, and these are then broken into four rows of three numbers. A dozens bet is a bet that covers one of these 12-number sections.
Columns
On the table, at the edge, you will see three squares that say “2:1” on them at the end of each column of numbers. Betting here will cover every number in that column, with your bet being doubled if you win.
Betting Strategies
If you decide that roulette is the game for you, there are betting strategies that you can use. Unlike other casino games such as poker, roulette is a game of luck where you have some input into the result. The only thing you can control is how you bet and how much you bet. Ensure you know how much you are betting, and remember not to break the bank, know when to stop.
The Martingale System
The Martingale System is based on the idea that, statistically, you will win at some point. Every time you lose, you double the bet you just made; therefore, when you win, you make a profit, and you’ve covered your previous losses.
Beware, though, this is exponential growth, and it is only suggested to do this two or three times before leaving the table. Bet very small, and go for smaller wins as opposed to giant payouts.
The Reverse Martingale
The Reverse Martingale is a strategy where you double your bet every time you win instead of when you lose. While this does minimize the damage of a loss, you will only start to see big returns if you latch onto a significant winning streak.
